Psyllium Husk Is One Of The Best Fiber Supplements In Your Diet

Fiber takes up space in the stomach and promotes satiety without actually contributing any calories to the body’s metabolism. Naturally high-fiber foods, such as vegetables, therefore provide more fullness per calorie than other foods.

Psyllium husk benefits are numerous. Found on the seeds of the Plantago ovata. For many people it is the fiber supplement to choose, not only because it is able to give them the fibre that they need but because there are many more health benefits to be gained from taking it. By using psyllium husk daily you can easily increase your daily fibre intake, which will provide your body with multiple benefits.

Psyllium husk has been found to have been consumed as early as 3000 B.C. It contains high amounts of dietary fibre. When exposed to water, psyllium absorbs the liquid and forms a gel-like substance. Other uses include gluten-free baking, where ground psyllium seed husks bind moisture.

Psyllium husk, like all fiber, has many health benefits. When you consume fiber, it makes you feel more full, which can keep you from overeating. It also decreases the rate at which sugar from your food enters your bloodstream, helping to maintain your blood sugar and prevent diabetes. The increased bulk of your food because of the presence of fiber helps increase the efficiency of your gut, and fiber also binds toxins and cholesterol.

Fiber plays an important role in weight management. Studies show that eating foods high in fiber can keep you full and, studies show that fiber intake is inversely associated with body weight and body fat. And finally, dietary fiber, notably insoluble fiber, can help relieve constipation.

There are many ways to get fiber in your diet -- fresh fruits and vegetables are a great source -- but you can supplement with psyllium husk powder if you're not sure you're getting enough dietary fiber. Each psyllium husk supplement is slightly different, so check package directions carefully before use.

Psyllium husk is used to help weight loss as part of a healthy balanced diet and if used correctly can increase the amount of fat in the stools. It also reduces your appetite giving you that fuller feeling for longer, so you won’t be tempted to snack between meals and helping you to shed those extra pounds. Take psyllium 10 to 20 minutes before meals as an aid to weight loss.

Although there are so many benefits of consuming the Psyllium husk, it is important not to be the victim of scams. There may be many weight loss programs that claim the use of the Psyllium husk. However, to be a wise consumer, always take time to do the necessary research first before falling prey to the Psyllium husk benefits advertised by the manufacturer.

Psyllium husk is usually found in powder or capsule form. Psyllium is one of the healthiest, simplest and effective forms for weight control. By adding psyllium fiber to your diet, not only will you feel more satisfied and eat less if you are dieting, it acts as a natural colon cleanse, and is good for heart disease, diabetes, high triglycerides, and irritable bowel syndrome. The benefits of taking psyllium fiber to promote weight loss, may have other benefits, as well.

Psyllium husk is white fibrous material derived from psyllium seeds. The seed has 40% Linoleic Acid (LA), an important fatty acid essential to health.

Psyllium husk contains huge amount of soluble and insoluble natural fibers responsible for it's laxative action. We mention some Proseessing steps for final product of psyllium.

Psyllium seed husk is manufactured by separating the psyllium seed husk from the remainder of the seed by slight mechanical pressure, by crushing the seeds between rotating plates or rollers.

The processes for dehusking psyllium seeds without substantial breakage and size reduction of the non-husk core of the psyllium seed are useful for manufacturing high yields of high purity psyllium seed husk from whole psyllium seeds.

A further processes for removing the psyllium seed husk from whole psyllium seed while avoiding breaking the core of the seed, thereby reducing contamination of the husk with non-husk seed parts resulting in higher purity due to easier separation of husk and non-husk seed parts.

The raw psyllium seeds are cleaned by mechanical process through various steps of processing.
Processes for psyllium seeds dehusking to obtain high yields of pure and quality psyllium seed husk.

These processes include milling intact psyllium seeds in a mill which causes the husk to be fragmented by collision under conditions whereby the husk is fractured and separated from the non-husk portion of the psyllium seed without substantial breakage and size reduction of the non-husk portion.

Psyllium Husk Benefits

Psyllium is the husk of the seed of the Plantain and is a top herb used in weight control and for general intestinal health.

Psyllium can provide the fiber that is missing on low carbohydrate diets. Every 100 grams of psyllium provides 71 grams of soluble fiber; a similar amount of oat bran would contain only 5 grams of soluble fiber.

Psyllium husk has been used for centuries in remedies and has been shown to be important for many reasons. It contains carbohydrates, is rich in soluble fiber and has anti-inflammatory properties. It has mainly been used to treat disorders of the digestive system and ailments of the heart.

Following is a list of key benefits of psyllium husk:
  • Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, it can be used not only as a laxative, but also to relieve the discomforts of diarrhea and ease the pain of hemorrhoids.
  • Most commonly used as a cleanser of the colon, it can also be useful in treating stomach and intestinal ulcers. It can also be used to treat inflammatory bowel syndrome.
  • It has been used to help maintain healthy cholesterol levels by absorbing cholesterol, as well as an aid in weight loss.
  • It is helpful in treating yeast infections throughout the body and also helps to maintain blood pressure levels.
  • Psyllium husk has been proven to benefit those who suffer from diabetes. In Type 2 diabetes, it can help improve the control of lipids
  • High sugar levels in blood - Proven to lower blood sugar levels in patients diagnosed with diabetes
  • Obesity and Weight Loss - improves lipid and sugar levels in the blood effectively reducing body weight
  • Colon Cancer Prevention - some studies have shown possibilities of reduced risk for colon cancer
  • Constipation - psyllium husk allows for increased absorption of water during digestion resulting to softened stools and reduced pain associated with hemorrhoids

It must be mentioned that rarely, people with asthma have been known to show psyllium side effects. They become hypersensitive to the psyllium dust when preparing it regularly, eg. nurses who dispense it out of large containers. It may trigger an asthma attack when appropriate masks are not worn.

Also, it is very important that when you take psyllium husk, you drink extra water to ensure that the psyllium can move through the colon with ease. It is also best that you begin with a low dose and slowly build up to the recommended dose.

The fibre in the psyllium husk provides food for good bacteria which helps to increase the levels of good bacteria in the bowel. This is very important for your health because this ensures good absorption of nutrients to be used by your body.

Psyllium doesn't have any known side effects if consumed moderately with plenty of water. However, some people may be allergic to psyllium, so if you notice any rash, hives, itchiness or swollen skin, stop the use of Psyllium husk and consult your physician.
